Snodgrass the Greek Yet another reprint of a classic of arms and armor literature, Snodgrass' 1967 work remains as important to the serious scholar of martial traditions and weaponry as it was on the day of its first publication. Snodgrass pieces together archaeological, literary, and artistic evidence to provide a more or less coherent picture of how weapons and armor developed in Greece over the course of nearly a millennium. Special attention is paid to the Age of the Hoplite as well as the earlier Mycenean period. The book's strength -- its readability and sweeping scope -- is also its main weakness, as it remains rather on the surface of what could be an exhaustive study into some of the more interesting aspects, particularly of edged weaponry and its practical use. Author: Snodgrass, A.M.
